Takashi KUMAGAI
Selection Committee - Mathematics
Professor, Department of Mathematics, Waseda University
Research Area: Mathematics, in particular Probability Theory
Prof. Takashi Kumagai currently serves as a Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science and Engineering at Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan . He is also a Professor Emeritus at Kyoto University’s Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences (RIMS), where he held a professorship until 2022.
Takashi Kumagai earned his PhD from Kyoto University in 1994. He began his academic career as an Assistant Professor at Osaka University (1991–1995) before moving to Nagoya University as an Associate Professor (1995–1998). He returned to Kyoto University in 1998, serving as an Associate Professor until 2007, when he was promoted to Professor at Department of Mathematics, and then moved to the Research Institute for Mathematical Sciences (RIMS) as a Professor in 2010. He remained at Kyoto University as a Professor until 2022, when he transitioned to Waseda University as a Professor, where he also holds the title of Professor Emeritus at Kyoto University.
Kumagai’s research lies at the intersection of probability theory, stochastic processes, and analysis on disordered media. He is internationally recognized for his work on anomalous diffusions on fractals and random media, as well as potential theory for jump processes on metric measure spaces.
