Chun So, Ph. D.
2026 AYS Fellow - Life Science
Assistant Professor, National Institute of Biological Sciences, Beijing
Research Area: Reproductive biology, Oocyte, Egg, Embryo, Meiosis, Spindle, Chromosome, Aneuploidy, Assisted reproductive technology, Pre-implantation development
Award Citation: The AYSF Committee honors Dr. Chun So's groundbreaking work on the molecular mechanisms of meiotic spindle assembly in mammalian oocytes, especially human oocytes. AYSF would like to support his innovative bench-to-bedside approach to uncovering the causes of developmental arrest in human pre-implantation embryos and developing new therapies to enhance the developmental efficiency of early human embryos—a milestone in human reproductive medicine.
Bio: Chun So joined the National Institute of Biological Sciences, Beijing, as an Assistant Investigator and the Tsinghua Institute of Multidisciplinary Biomedical Research as an Assistant Professor in 2022. He currently also serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He received his B.Sc. with first-class honours in Cell and Molecular Biology from The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2016 and his Ph.D., summa cum laude, in Physics of Biological and Complex Systems from Georg-August-Universität Göttingen in 2019. His lab utilizes cutting-edge microscopy to study mammalian oocyte and preimplantation embryo development. His work has been published in journals including Cell (2023, 2026), Science (2019, 2022a, 2022b), Nature Biotechnology, Nature Aging, Nature Communications, and Nature Protocols. He has received several honors, including the Academic Rising Star award from Tsinghua University, the DAMO Academy Young Fellowship from Alibaba DAMO Academy, the Innovators Under 35 China award from MIT Technology Review, the Nikon Young Scientist Award from the German Society for Cell Biology, and the Otto Hahn Medal and Otto Hahn Award from the Max Planck Society.
