Vasudevan SRINIVAS

Steering Committee - Mathematics

Senior Professor, School of Mathematics, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research

Research Area: Algebraic geometry in mathematics

Location: Delhi, India

Vasudevan Srinivas received BSc (1977) from Bangalore University and did his MS (1978) and PhD (1982) degrees at the University of Chicago. During PhD, he worked under the guidance of Spencer Bloch on zero cycles on singular surfaces. After a brief stint at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, he joined the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Mumbai as a Visiting Fellow (1983), became Fellow (1983), and is working there as Senior Professor presently.

Srinivas has worked mainly in algebraic geometry. One of his abiding interests has been the study of algebraic cycles on singular algebraic varieties. Other themes in his work are on the interface with commutative algebra: on projective modules, divisor class groups, unique factorization domains, and Hilbert functions and multiplicity. He has also worked on aspects of positive characteristic algebraic geometry. Another important work is on the solution of Zariski's problem (Riemann-Roch problem for surfaces), obtained together with Cutkosky. He has guided five PhD students so far.

Professor Srinivas has received several awards, including INSA Medal for Young Scientists (1987), Birla Award for Mathematical Sciences (1995), Swarnajayanthi Fellowship by DST (1998), Bhatnagar Award (2003), JC Bose Fellowship of the DST (2008), and the TWAS Mathematics Prize (2008). He was  elected Fellow of the India Academy of Sciences, Bangalore (1994), and as Member at Large of the Executive Committee of the International Mathematical Union (IMU) for the period 2011-2014. He has been chosen as one of the Inaugural Class of Fellows of the American Mathemtical Society. He is on the Editorial Boards of several international journals:  Mathematische Annalen, the Algebra and Number Theory Journal, the Journal of Algebra, and the Asian Journal of Mathematics.
