Mikyung Shin, Ph.D.

2026 AYS Fellow - Physical Science

Associate Professor, Sungkyunkwan University

Research areas: Polymeric materials; Biomaterials; Hydrogels; Biointerfaces; Tissue adhesives; Tissue regeneration; Peripheral nerve; Muscle.

Award Citation: The AYSF Committee acknowledges Dr. Mikyung Shin's contributions to adhesive and electroconductive hydrogels. AYSF would like to support her exploration of adhesive hydrogel fillers for brain tumor inhibition and neuronal regeneration.

Bio: Mikyung Shin is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Sungkyunkwan University, South Korea. She received her Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Nanoscience and Technology at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) and completed her postdoctoral research in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research focuses on tissue-adhesive and soft biomaterials engineering for tissue regeneration and bioelectronic interfaces. In particular, her work encompasses the development of advanced biomaterials for electroactive tissues, including the central and peripheral nervous systems as well as cardiac and skeletal muscles, and for biotic–abiotic interfaces. Her representative work has been published in leading journals, including Nature (2023), Nature Electronics (2023, 2024), Nature Materials (2017), Nature Biomedical Engineering (2018), and Advanced Materials (2023, 2024), among others. She was selected as a member of the Young Korean Academy of Science and Technology (Y-KAST) in 2024 and received the Young Scientist Award (Korea Presidential Award) in 2025.
